I use metal posts that are covered in plastic (courtesy of b&q) to hold up my cage netting, to stop the netting being pierced I use tennis balls that have been slit with a stanley knife to put on top of the posts bought from the £1 shop, I think it was 6 for a £1, they have the added advantage that they appear to 'glow in the dark'

Nick your offering Gladdioli in the seed swop. Perhaps you should ask for rhubarb crowns? Not sure how much P&P would set a person back but all the soil could be washed off at this time of year and that would limit the weight.

Tennis balls also make a great cheap repalcement for those "Buildaballs" you can buy to join canes together to make frames over crops.
