  • sustenance while at the lottie

As some of you know I will now have more time to spend at the lottie.

The thing is that, before this, I would spend a few hours there at the weekend and a bit in the evenings during summer taking a bottle of water and a pack of fags to keep me going. I did try taking a flask a few times but I found it got cold a bit too quick for my liking ( I do like my caffeine to almost burn as it goes down the throat)
I live just round the corner from the plot, so I could just pop home for a buttie if I felt peckish and have a cuppa at the same time.
But now I plan spending a lot more time there, I don't really want to have to come home several times a day only to go back again later, mostly because once I get home I will find jobs there that need doing too.

So my question is what do you like to take to munch on when you are going to your plot for the best part of the day.

I am a bit of a camper, so I can do the open cooking thing in a limited way.
I thought maybe I could have a little fire going for hot water for my coffee and very simple cooking.

    All suggestions gratefully received.

You could make some home made trail mix
      Ingredients can include:

      Nuts
      Seeds
      Cereals
      Crackers
      Pretzels
      Popcorn
Dried fruit (get the dehydrator out!)
Sweets (M&Ms, Smarties, chocolate drops, etc)
      Yoghurt covered fruit.

      Mmmmmmm

If I had a lottie, I would be tempted to keep a bbq lit most of the day for both food & drink.

I keep a box of nice cereal and a few Cokes in the shed to snack on. It does me.
If it's a hot day I'll take a litre of grapefruit squash. In the summer I will take a small pot of bean salad and then garnish it with salad leaves from the lotty.

I also graze on soft fruit all day when it's in season: I rarely take strawberries home at all.

I have a small camping stove that takes butane bottles, today I toasted bagels over the flame and spread them with cream cheese, but most days soup and of course when the new spuds or sweeetcorn are out, I always take some butter, salt and pepper, boil a pan of water then dig up the spuds or twist off the corn, straight into the pan and lashings of butter - delish - salivating now just thinking about it! You could always get a little wok and make a stir fry from your veg!

What you need is a storm kettle, WW.
All the other lottie holders gather round when mine is on the go. You take the water with you - the kettle is hollow with the water kept in the outer jacket. Take the bung out to boil. Light a fire in the bottom pan, angle it to get a good draft and a short while later the water is boiling! Simples

I have a storm kettle but don't actually use it that much. In winter I tend to take soup in my wide necked flask and maybe some butties and always lots of fruit but as it gets warmer I don't bother with the soup so much and take fruit juice. Flap jack is always welcome too. If it's light and not raining too much then I'll spend up to 12 hours up there and even at this time of year I can be up there for 8 or 9 hours so take enough to keep me going.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

^ Lol! My first thought was that you need to listen to Uncle Snadge And I'm pretty sure his 'woodburner' is made out of two pieces of string and an empty tin can (or similar)
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery

I dont have a shed on the plot, just a communal one and as my plot is furthest away from everything, not practical to use. I do like soup though so a stove or fire for that will be done. And things straight from the plot is a good one.

                          Ollie's Snacks R U sounds good too.

bean salad garnished with salad leaves yes, I have just discovered how good a variety of beans is so I will be doing that.

toasted bagels with cream cheese - mmmmmmmm
new spuds ,sweeetcorn butter, salt and pepper, mmmmmmmmmm
now I need to wipe drool off my keyboard

                          stir fry yumm.

The storm kettle looks good. How much water does it hold? I haven't seen them before.

Flap jacks are easy to make and I always have lots of oats. Good one.

binley How do you hide your camping stove in plain sight ? I need that idea!

Ok now I will be spending lots of time preparing and cooking food as well as digging and planting on the plot.

                          Thanks for the ideas everyone.

It's not in the shed. When the little oiks come a calling they go in the sheds and don't look round the plots.
