  • Slug Population

    Hi
Since I've had my hens I reckon I must have fed them in excess of 1,500 slugs from my allotment.
Is it wishful thinking or the time of the year that they are getting harder and harder to find? How long do they live, do they die over winter??
I can still find a number of those small off-white blobby ones (are they young ones or a different variety?) but the big brown and black ones and the leopard slugs are few and far between. A pity (!) as those are their favourites.
Will have to move onto woodlice which is a bit of a pain as they take longer to catch in decent numbers.

That would be a nice parcel for Customs to investigate!
Perhaps I'll say no, I'm sure I'm deluding myself and an invasion is being planned at this very minute.

Sue, woodlice traps is what you need. Inverted plastic cups (or tin cans) on short canes filled with shredded paper or dried grass. After a few days, dump the contents in the run and let the chooks get some practice at chasing wood lice.

Woodlice trap, aka. my french beans. I thought it was slug damage, but on inspection, the little pillbugs have excavated beany hotels for themselves

As for slugs, there were loads out on the damp pavements again this morning, nibbling away at their dead relatives
