  • Sharpening devices!

I've no idea if this is in the right section or not - didn't quite know where it fitted!

I desperately need to sharpen my gardening implements: hoes, secateurs, loppers etc... Santa didn't bring me one and i've no idea where to get one or what sort to buy. It needs to do both secateurs and hoes so does this pose a problem? Would a sharpening 'stone' be better (like the ones you can get to sharpen kitchen knives)?

Can't spend a fortune, but my hoe is as blunt as a plastic knife!

A good file should do your job Protea. Just remember to file away from the edge ie face the edge towards you and push the file away from you . Clear as mud -I thought so. Someone may come along and explain it better than I can.If in doubt consult an expert.

Yes, that makes sense - thanks to both of you.

Should i get a flat file for the hoes and one of those half-moon ones for the rounded secateurs etc? (they're rounded on one side and flat on the other - i'm sure i used to use them in DT at school!)

One flat one about an inch and a half wide for your hoe . Dont really know what to suggest for your secateurs - probably a very small one that takes off a little at a time so you dont destroy the secateurs.

BTW, we have a local chappie who sharpens lawnmower blades - it may be worth looking up in your area - then you can either pay for your tools to be sharpened, or ask his advice!
