I have clay soil and have had problems with panning on seed beds. Even though I have added huge ammounts of humus when I produce a fine tilth it still pans.
I think I have finally solved the problem. I have laid old net curtains over the bed and watered through them. They provide just enough shade to prevent panning and lets enough light through for the seedlings. Once they are through I will take them off.
BTW it keeps the cats off too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
