Default plastic bottle watering system

Hi there
Ive been desperately trying to come up with a way to keep my tomatoes etc in my polytunnel watered whilst on holiday. Ive read about using upturned pop bottles. When experimenting I found that if I made a small hole in the lid, cut off the bottom of the bottle and then inserted (well I used a small paint brush) the water dripped out nicely. What I would like to know is :
1) How long would a 2L bottle last.
I noticed that when the end of the paintbrush made contact with the expelled water(I upturned it in another vessel) the water level stopped going down.
2) Would this happen in the ground.ie: once the soil was saturated .
3) would keeping the polytunnel plants constantly saturated be detrimental to them.
Thanks
Tenpin

Go to £streacher and they do an Irrigation system for £5 its about 30m of pipe and 20 drippers. The drippers were crap so I pushed a nail thrught them. I connected mine up to a water butt and went away for a week and all was happy and nice when I came home. The kit contains fittings so you can connect to a tap.

also look at Lidl / Aldi/ Netto/ Robert Dyas and Wilkinsons.

The other thing you could do is to get a soaker hose and attach that to the butt.
