Humm - 12 " = 30 cm if that's any help. As to litres - well I always go by whether it looks big enough! It depends what I'm using them for. Little ones for raising seeds or potting on individual small plants. A bit bigger (that's a techinical term!) for potting on when small pot is outgrown. A Big One - usually 10 - 12 " or more) for final potting of stuff I'm growing in pots for the season.

You don't really need to get technical unless you're selling stuff and need to describe it accurately. Don't get hung up on it.

        8" probably!

If the packet is refering to the final pot size for the plants it will generally be an 8" or 10" pot.

5lt means it will hold 5lt of potting compost - why is compost in litres not kilos..... who knows, do they mean dry weight or after watering.... haven't a clue! Can these people speak English.... I doubt it!

To be boring and answer the exact question. 8" is about 20 cm, so a 5lt pot will be in the order of 20 to 30 cm diametre measured across the top of the pot. try looking underneath a pot to see if it says, you never know....

Oh boy have you touched a nerve!
I got two lots of freecycle plant pots this spring, wonderful variety and two big bags full which helped with the seedlings. I washed them all and sorted them by size, then the fun started!

You have no idea how many different sizes plant pots come in.

I will cut a long story short and just say that if you need a wide deep pot, trust your judgement. Life is too short to be measuring/converting and discarding plant pots ......

I'm sorry Madderbat, I never ment to suggest that you should measure all your pots, only the first 50 or so.....

Mostly I don't fuss about pot size. as it's the final pot size and I for once read the seed packet I thought I would try and do the right thing!
it's a mine field out there in pot world!!!

I just go with my gut instinct if its roots are comeing out the bottom or on the top pot in a bigger pot or if the pot feels solid then it could be pot bound so re pot in a biggger pot
