Default Lidl bargains (again!) sat 27th jan

Hi all, Was in my local lidl today and, for the south of England at least, on that date, they will have their fruit trees back in at £3.99, Ornamental Trees at £4.99, Mini greenhouses (parsley, basil and sundry other stuff) at 69p, seed and cutting compost 20L 99p.

I know it differs in other parts of the country and as far as the mini "greenhouses" are concerned I've never succeeded but thought I'd let you know.

Why are your Lidl's so much better than ours? I've even signed up for their e-mail promotions and ours doesn't seem to do any garden stuff.

The potting compost for 99p is recycled and cleaned nursery stock with associated Fungi and other crap in. It would usually be steamed but this has been ommitted to make it much cheaper it also has little if any nutrients. Best buy the named varieties this is one of the reasons gardeners cannot get some seeds to germinate.
Someone may have had good results from it but I would not touch it with a barge pole.

Thanks Earthbabe, I'll be down to Lidl next week for a look. We haven't had our usual leaflet through the door for a few weeks, think the delivery lady must be ill or on her hols!

They don't have the seeds in stock in ours yet but I usually pick some up as they can do really well.

Yup, same here, noticed when visiting for essentials like cucumber for the guinea pigs and fizzy water and apple juice for Miss E who is a bit poorly.

Think I'd best nip over to the Lidl in Newmarket, that the nearest one to me I think.
I hope they've got some bits in. A mini greenhouse would be ideal, I'd be able to see the top of my kitchen table if I could move the trays of seedlings elsewhere!

KB the mini greenhouse thingies are little trays with there own "cloche". The plastic growhouses will be in later in the year but they clear out very quickly. Sign up to the newsletter to find out when they will be in. The site can give you your nearest shop too.

BTW - I don't have shares in Lidl, nor do I work there.

Hi guys
have taken your advise and signed up to the LIDL newsletter. Took me a while to persuade the website to send me the French version!
We use Lidl here all the time, its our Waitrose, now we are living in France!!
Any more top tips?

Lidl Plastic Greenhouses - beware! I got one last year and it lasted, oh, several weeks before the plastic cover ripped. The whole thing has now been completely destroyed by the wind, ripped and twisted in half and back over itself - quite a feat. All my overwintering plants were dashed to the ground and smashed up. Boo.

Oh, I'd just like to point out its not just Lidl greenhouses...we've bought several from different retailers, and they all end up ripped at the first puff of wind. Also, the sun does something queer to the plastic shelving...after a season it all goes brittle and snaps into pieces, usually when fully laden with seedlings.

I came back from Lidls yesterday with a Sago palm and a lovely healthy African Violet, they had an excellent selection of colours. Was surprised to see the palm there, but I got it cos my cat usually destroys houseplants for fun, but she may think twice about a spiky Sago...!
