  • Credit Crunch Gift Ideas

We're all feeling a little bereft of cash these days so I thought it would be a good idea now we're in the second half of the year and approaching 'that' time in December to think about lovely to receive gifts that aren't going to mean a second mortgage!

Many of us here already do the obvious associated with our hobby.

Jams, pickles, preserves, wines, cakes etc.

My idea came quite by accident. Needing a small container for some kiddie sweets I bought from a supermarket (3 for £1) I found one of the many DEgberts coffee jars I had - otherwise used for spices and dried beans/lentils etc. The selection of shining/sugared jelly sweets layered looks very pleasing to the eye and I think would make a great little gift for a workmate to place on their desk - or make up a slightly larger one for a family. A little ribbon (recovered?) and a bow stuck on the top will add to the festive appearance - or fill the inside of the cap with sweets or sprig of holly. You get your coffee jar free if you drink the brand - or another which comes the same way - and you add a quids worth of sweets.

The more enterprising may even make their own sweets to make it even more personal.

Could be given at any time of year really.

At my daughters primary school we used to do fill a jam jar, the idea being that parents fill a jam jar of any size with anything they could fit into one. Amazing what some people put in, even had a clown puppet in one. The first year I put material circles on the lids but now they just put pretty paper on the lids.

That's actually another very good idea - the gift limited to the size of the container.

Make bath bombs. The lovely James Wong did it on grow your own drugs.
A lovely Grape (Jill, I think) emailed me some recipes, would be happy to pass them on.

I made bath bombs last year, as well as soap and healing salve, they went down a storm

We also made biscuits, biscotti and gingerbread and wrapped it in cellophane with pretty ribbon tied round it

I made jams, chutneys, relishes, curds, christmas puds, sticky toffee puds and pickles last year - all were very gratefully received. The Lemon Curd and Gingerbread combination in a gift bag or basket went down very well too.

Oh I'm so glad I found this - a website for knitting toys and decorations by my favourite pattern designer - Jean Greenhowe.

Jean Greenhowe Designs Official Website - Jean Greenhowe free knitting patterns, knitted dolls, toys

I've made several toys and decorations from her books and leaflets and have no idea how easy it is to obtain now.

She has kindly included many free patters to download from this site.

So if you're handy with those knitting needles here is an excellent way to use up the tiniest of wool scraps for either gifts or school/church fairs.

I've made the footballer up for girls and boys alike - adapting the colour scheme to their fave teams!

Towards the end of last year and for Christmas, I made lots of sweetie type things, chutneys and flavoured oils as pressies etc. I found Nigellas "Express" book invaluable for ideas and recipies. Will be doing the same again this year!

I am going to plant some hyacinths and narcissi and force some bulbs for pressies this year. I have been saving the containers I got pressies in last year and family have been donating them to me as well

There are some great ideas coming through - any chance one of the mods could pin this thread up nearer the top of the board?

Provided they think it is worthy of consideration?

The initial bruhaha will die down - but as we hurtle towards the giving season it'll be easier to find and add those spontaneous ideas as they crop up.

                          Good thread!!!
As well as the homemade things,we came to an agreement with our bestie friends a couple of years ago that we wouldn't give each other(or kiddies)any new pressies...instead carboot or charity shop finds.
If you've come to an agreement beforehand & as long as everyone sticks to the plan,no need for embarassment at giving an obviously preloved item.
Last year we did something similar, set ourselves a limit of a fiver each & get each other lots of little "novel" items...which is how I ended up with my framed piccie of HFW!!!

Another idea for "free" food jars,if you buy Nutella chocolate spread the smaller jars make perfect little glasses to pop truffles/sweets into.Wrap with floristry cellophane stuff & tie with a ribbopn.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

Tooooo dumb to have actually considered that one - but OK - I'm willing to take the plaudits - so few do I get!

Lets just have some fun - create some lovely old-fashioned (cheap) personal gifts and share our ideas!
