  • Calling all gas cooker gurus

Does anyone know how to get a stainless steel gas cooker clean?

I'm not obsessive, just want it to look like it gets a cleaning - no matter what I do, the cooker, the rings and black iron things surrounding them, and the stainless steel backing always look dirty.

The cooker is only a year old and I've followed the makers' recommendations from the beginning (they advise warm soapy water and a soft cloth) but with only a grubby looking cooker to show for it.

    All ideas welcome.

That Whizz Power Oven Cleaner does a great job and why not finish off with Cif Stainless Steel Gel with polishing agents?

I use a microfibre cloth and hot (very) water - nothing else

well there uis some stuff I got from woolies that i use on my ceramic hob, can't remember what its called though and its somewhere in the debris which is my lounge at the moment.

however when I bought the cooker, from comet, I was talked into buying and e-cloth for cleaning it, looks a bit like a flannel almost, washable etc, and you just use it with soap and water, polishes it up BRILL, and I have had it 4 years now, so the initial expense was well worth it, and it does get stuff off without scrubbing, just a good hard rub. they do ones for glass as well, i use that on all my chrome stuff.

i use cillit bang and that oven pride stuff with the bags when everything gets really grotty, and apparently once it's clean you wipe it over with baby oil to keep it shiny .... (think that was off how clean is your house).

Baby oil is supposed to be good but never used it but wouldn't go near the cillit bang stuff, one spray of it and I'm sneezing and coughing over the fumes. Horrible stuff.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

yeah, i hate cillit bang too, but son gets it cheap/free from work (he gets all the damaged bottles of everything) but it does strip paint and i even sprayed it on my BBQ last year, after it had been used twice and left all winter, sprayed it on, left for a couple of hours, then rinsed off with a hot hose pipe, it looked brand new, ....... i had already tried with a scourer.

The dreaded cillit bang has stained my stainless steel splashguard behind the cooker = now whenever you wipe it down the cloth is almost rusty.

I use a hand held steamer on a lot of the kitchen cleaning (new gadget!)

cillit bang should be regarded as an enviromental hazard along with that aweful bloke who advertises it.

I won't buy Cillit Bang just because of the stupid name - mind you I stopped eating Marathons when they changed the name to Snickers, so I'm obviously mental!

Have you tried a product called Grillomat? I got a bottle from the Lakeland Catalogue people years ago to try and keep on top of our disgusting cooker (OH used to be a professional Chef, so doesn't believe in cleaning up after himself) and it was excellent. You just paint it on and leave it for a while then wash it off (I think!). It even removed all the baked-on black stuff from the oven shelves too - anyway, it's worth a try.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions - I've already ordered the e-cloth and I'm also going to try the other ideas - the Whizz Power Cleaner and will try to get Grillomat + I'm going to do the baby oil and also the Cif polishing stuff - not together, am going to use all these at different cleaning times (so will take some time to check all) and then decide which suits my cooker best.

The only one I'll pass on is Cillit Bang - I've tried it just once and I didn't like the smell which I thought smelled too chemically - probably just me, but at that time one of my children used to react (with itching) to all sorts of things and I thought it might affect his eczema.

Thanks again everyone - this site is so full of helpful, generous people!

please dont think im a cheap skate, but i use hot water as hot as i can stand it with a pair of marigolds on and a generous dose of washing soda 1-2 table spoons (58 pence a bag from tescos) when washing soda dissolved give everything a scrub then go over surface again to remove anything left behind you miss. wipe over with plain hot water to remove any residue. (soap leaves water marks ) also vinegar and newspaper will buff the stainless steel back plate to gleaming.

my e-cloth ( the bathroom/glass one) just found another perfect use, the new kitchen has high gloss finish worktops, quick spray with water, wipe down no smears or finger marks, you can't beat em.

Impatiently waiting for my e-cloth (ordered on t'Internet) and so is my house!

Am definitely making an improvement in the cooker in the meantime.
