  • Any fellow Skiprats on here? Whats your best find?

So far my best find has been a couple of big deep blue glazed ceramic pots. Not a mark or crack on them. I cant believe how wasteful folk can be!

My other half works for a skip hire company and he's based at the yard emptying the skips. Best non-gyo finds are a perfect condition 65litre fish tank complete with filter and ornaments, used but still in the box and a video camera in working order complete with case and charger. Best gyo finds, where do I start, excellent condition Garden Trading bulb + seed tin, good condition Burgon & Ball greenhouse caddy.

I do think it's a damn disgrace what people throw away. All of the stuff he's brought home would be snapped up on freecycle by someone who can't afford the stuff. It's certainly opened my eyes to recycling and not binning so many things.
Remember it's just a bad day, not a bad life 😁

When we lived in Spain where skip raiding is encouraged I got some great goodies and a friend got an amazing chandelier. On a cautionary note my husband took a portable gas fire from the skip, the kind that takes a butane bottle. He lit it and after our house burned down realised that the reason that it had been binned was because the emergency cut out didn't work. So be careful!!!!!!!

Nor us although when I asked the men if I could remove a large mirror from a skip, they said, we're having a cup of tea at the moment and looking the other way Unfortunately, once I'd hoicked it out , it had a huge crack across the glass I didn't have the nerve to chuck it back in the skip so its still in the garage here

The guys at the tips near me are total t*ssers. Real jobsworth types. I know there are H&S issues about people rummaging in tips, falling in etc...but I went to take a nice plank out of the timber skip a while back and was instantly pounced upon. I didn't have to reach into a skip, it was just there, within easy reach.....it was like I was trying to abduct his granny !!
            Are y'oroight booy?

I will admit that a few years ago I had a dilapidated greenhouse to remove as I made space for an office to be put in my tiny garden. Lots of waste and pots 😳

I regret it badly now....but I had nowhere to put them. Looking back I'm so glad some people came and asked for my pots. I'm gutted now, but they went to a good home. Can't emphiasize my guttedness, as I try to get pots on freecycle
But I didn't have an allotment then. Young and stupid is all I can say....and yes...to someone they were a great slip haul

A pressure washer, two sewing machines, two dysons, a rocking chair, numerous planks of wood, a spong mincer, biscuit cutters, mirrors, frames, vintage lampshades...the list is endless.....

We are not allowed near our local skips, do anything there except dump stuff and they go mental at you

When I lived in the Netherlands in the 1980s there was one day a month when you put all your old furniture and large rubbish out on the pavement. Anybody was free to help themselves until the refuse van came in the early hours.

On a cycle ride through the local villages, spotted a dalek type compost bin perched on top of a skip, looked new to me so got pedalling for home at top speed and went back in the van, still there so had it. My best skip find so far!

You should have worn it home, head out the top, pedalling like mad no handed..............

I wish we could adopt this excellent practice from the Dutch. Nice one

I intercepted a couple lugging some garden planters to a skip and asked if I could have them. They looked at me like I was mad but gave them to me anyway . I've just raided my mother in laws garden for all their million broken slabs and bricks to build a base for my shed.

Not the same thing but I bought my son a brand new pure cashmere jumper in charity shop for 30p. He wore it until it fell to bits. It's what people will throw away.

A local factory that receives timber frame ( flat pack houses) have large skips that they ditch the mainly timber packaging into, my free raised bed material came from there.........I have been told that it depends on which managers on duty, but free wood = happy moz
