Visit your plot in bad weather to identify cold spots and areas of waterlogging, also note where the shadows of sheds, fences and the like fall in winter. It's so easy to plant something, overwintering cabbages for example, in full sun, only for them to spend the winter months languishing in the shade because the sun is lower and so the shadows are much longer

I never got my hands on seed tapes, but I use toliet paper, just roll it out when sowing seeds, makes it easier to work with spacing, especially if you're sowing small seeds. Cover seeds with compost/soil, water, and paper would degrade in no time

For extra-quick Basil plants:
Rather than growing from seed, buy a really healthy-looking 'growing Basil plant' from your local supermarket. Cut each stem off at compost-level, and put them in a glass of water up to the level of their lowest leaves. Within a few weeks, the stems will have sprouted roots, and you can pot each of these up to grow on.

Default Quick Easy Planting Technique

When pricking out seedlings that need to grow on in individual pots for a while before planting out properly, prick them out into 3" round pots.
When the roots are beginning to fill these pots and you need to plant them outside, take a BULB PLANTING TOOL and remove a core of soil, and pop the contents of the 3" pot straight into the hole, backfilling with the remaining soil released from the Bulb Planter. This technique is particularly useful when planting Brassicas, which prefer a firmed-soil planting position.
