  • Florence fennel

    Hi guys. I am trying to grow according to the biodynamic calendar this year, and am stuck with fennel bulbs. Are they
    1 fruit
    2 leaf
    3 root
    4 flower

    a bit confused. There isn't a category for swollen stem😃

      I checked on-line at
      planting by the cosmic calendar: a biodynamic q&a with turtle tree - A Way To Garden

      and found this answer

      "There is no hard and fast rule about what plant goes into which category—it depends on the use to which the gardener or farmer wants to put that plant: Should it make a large root or rooty lower stem structure? Do we want to encourage leafy growth? Are we aiming for early and prolific flowering, or is fruit formation the most important?"

      So I think that florence fennel should be treated as a "root".

      Hope this helps

      Bill

      P.S. interesting question that has puzzled me for a while. I had not looked for the answer before because I didn't need it. Glad you asked.

        Ha!..And I found this...

        https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/grow-y...-fennel?type=v

        ie ..
        "Feed with high potassium fertiliser every two weeks once established."

        potassium = K in the N:P:K

        K= fruits

        so- it implies it needs feeding as a fruit bearing plant???????

        te he...things are never quite as clean cut as you expect eh????

          I don't know anything about biodynamic gardening, but florence fennel is one of the umbelliferae, the same family as carrots, parsnips, parsley, celery and celeriac.

            I'd say root too

            Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

            Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
