  • Banana Shallots

    I love banana shallots.
They have that sweet shallot taste but are as easy to peel as onions.
    Perfick

Having tried and failed to buy them from various sources online (always bog standard little shallots arrive) I have bought some from the greengrocer that I will try to grow.

    So,
    questions....

Should I plant them now? I have an unheated greenhouse in a southfacing garden and I'm in London.

Should I store them til spring? If so, do they need to be dark? cold? refrigerated?

If they do grow (big If, I know) will I be able to save and grow the seeds?

    Thanks in advance folks...

IIRC They don't grow like other shallots, from a planted set - you have to grow them from seed.

Yep, shop bought ones will run to seed. They can only be grown from seed & do not multiply like common shallots, you just get the one bulb....................apparently......

I did try once before....about five years ago...and if I remember correctly, two split into three each, two went straight to seed and all the rest did nowt.
Those were planted in spring so I thought this time I'd try an autumn planting to see if I got better results....although it's starting to sound unlikely

Wish I'd saved the seeds from the ones that bolted now!

Anyway, they were very cheap so I will go ahead and bung them in, nothing ventured nothing gained and all that. I might get lucky and there's precious little else to do save mountains of back breaking digging....any distraction is welcome

In the meantime though, if anyone should come across the genuine article for sale as seed...please let me know?

Why don't you just try growing from seed?

                Scarlet! you absolute star!

Realseeds are my all time favourite seed company and somehow I totally missed that they sold banana shallot seeds!
What's more, I can sow them in January (I am always desperate to sow things in January) Thank you, you have made my day. I'll eat these ones then and order some seeds!

Keep a few of your shallots back to re-plant and you will get free seeds for the next year.
