  • When will I know if my gooseberries are red or green?

I have a gooseberry bush growing happily in the garden and it has got a fair few small gooseberries starting to grow, trouble is I can't remember whether it was a red or green type. The berries are green at the minute but when will I be able to tell if they are gonna be green or red? I could just wait and see but I was wondering if they'd be red already if it was that type? I'm just starting to get into fruit growing as I've just really been in to veg before now. Thanks peeps

If memory serves me right, I'm sure my red goosegogs grew red from the off.

Yeah, most currants and gooseberries stay green until they ripen. Best to just keep an eye out once they get to full size, you should know pretty quickly what colour they'll end up

Well they were yesterday, but not this morning, as they have all disappeared

Thanks guys, I was considering buying anther gooseberry bush but wanted to get the opposite from what I have. I'll just have to wait and see what colour they end up.

So have mine Fishpond. !! It was full of tiny developing fruits (all green though it's a red variety) but they've disappeared. I've not netted yet (did you?) as usually birds etc ignore the fruit until nearer ripening.
Where has it gone??? Few snapped branches, despite putting stakes in and around,no doubt pigeons.
In fact it seems according to another gyo reader pigeons maybe the culprit for leaf stripping my plum tree too. Have they changed tack this year? Little bbbb..blighters.

                        No, not netted this year.
I have been finding occasional snapped branches also.
I think you are spot on with Pigeons.
I never give the Bxxxxxs a thought, Pigeon pie anyone.

My goosegogs were red, they were green for a while but with all the sun we've had recently they turned red. I didn't net mine and I don't seem to have lost any. Strawberries on the other hand disappear on a daily basis although I wouldn't know where to start blaming for that.
