  • Should I just bin these potatoes now?

I bought a bag of Maris Piper seed potatoes from the garden centre weeks ago, probably at least 6-8 weeks ago.

They disappeared and we had assumed they had accidentally got caught up with stuff that was taken to the dump.

However they have just turned up. They've been wedged in a corner of a cold porch behind a solid unit where they obviously slipped behind but there wasn't enough space for them to fall to the ground which is why they weren't found till now. (Ironically we looked under the unit in case they had got pushed under by mistake, never thought they could have fitted behind it.)

Anyway, they are very shrivelled and wrinkled looking but have lots of chits.

Are they too past it to plant now?

They would be going in potato growing pots so I'd have to buy compost for them. Don't want to waste money doing that if they are unlikely to grow properly.

If they have remained dry they will still be good to use.

Thanks KofA, yes, they have not been near water/moisture which is probably why they have shrivelled as much.

I'll get them in later today hopefully and give them a go.

Plant them if you have room.

Last year when I started my allotment, my neighbour discovered some potatoes in his shed, he couldn`t remember what variety they were, so cleared a patch in his, not very loamy, ground, planted as usual and they came up lovely, this was around the end of June too!
Girls are like flowers, a little attention every day and they`ll blossom.

If they fail you wont have wasted your money because you will still have the compost. Potatoes are robust things, my compost bin is full of shoots from the peelings we put in.
