  • Asparagus

This year I created a new well prepared deep bed and planted as per directions 3 varieties of Asparagus in the Spring. Following the instructions I did not take any stems this year .... so what I have is 3 rows of 4 foot high green foliage ... looking a bit like carrot tops on steroids.

So what do I do with it now ... do I cut back, leave it die back ... looked in all my books they give no advice after the point of don't cut any stems in first year.

Leave them till the stems go brown (probably the first frost will do that). Then cut them down to the ground and mulch your bed.

Thanks .... any feed worth adding at that time (FBB or similar) or should I leave that to next year.

No point in adding fertiliser until the plants start growing again in spring.
