  • using old strawberry bed for carrots n parsnips

    Hi
I have a large high sided bed which has previously been used for the past 3 years as a strawberry bed (with good results and fruit, I might add). It is a composite of grit and soil, although I haven't added anything to it during that time. Due to needing space, I'm considering using the bed for carrots and parsnips. Can I use it as it is or would I be better adding fresh MPC to bulk it up?
I was told that the chap who had my plot before me used it specifically for competition growing.
Help! As I'm unsure what to do.

How gritty is the soil? Carrots I know like a nice smooth soil or they fork. Don't know about parsnips.

It's very fine, sammy. Almost like very fine sand.

Should be fine for carrots and parsnips.

Thanks RL. Do you think I should add anything to the soil ?

Maybe a sprinkling of Blood, Fish & Bone.
