  • Planting Asparagus Help please

    Hi Gang
I've not been around for a while. Back because I know you lot will know the answer. How the heck do I plant asparagus? I have read lots of stuff about trenches and raised rows and am now confused!
I think I need to do a trench like a bean trench, put the crowns in and then earth up into a mound. Is that right? Or should the crowns be on top of a mound and then earthed up some more?

I have fine free draining loam and I am worried that if I mound too hight the rain will wash it away and expose the crowns.

    Help please

Your trench needs to have a central ridge on which the roots of the crowns can be spread over, then fill trench with soil.

Dig a trench around 6 in deep, you're supposed to make a central ridge as stated above to drape the roots over but I had an epic fail at that so made individual heaps for each plant. The cover with about 5 in soil which will actually be a little higher than the surrounding soil due to the size of the crowns.
