  • New Asparagus Plot

    Hello,
I would like to start planting Aspragus this spring. I'm about to buy several raised bed kits from Scaffold Direct, 3 for normal veg and a dedicated one for Asparagus.
I would like to start this year.

With regards to bed preparation etc , can I build the bed, dig over the soil with some compost and expect to be able to start growing them this year or is longer bed preparation needed i.e. from Autumn etc. ?

Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alan

As it's a long term bed you want to prepare it thoroughly.
Dig, weed, wait, weed, dig, add compost..

If you can use a saw and hammer you can make beds cheaper than that. Although it depends how much time you have.

In my experience you just need to remove all perennial weeds before planting asparagus.

I can see no reason to leave a bed a year, unless it's to let the soil settle.

Thanks. Will start this year !
Getting beds from Scaffold direct as they sell 8' x 4' bed for £20, and time is an issue too.....

Just had a look at that site Albo, and they seem to have some good deals on there.
