  • Is this edible Asparagus?

I just happened to be in my folks garden mentioning Veg and my dad said oh yes, I forgot to say we have Asparagus and I was puzzled as I never noticed it and then he showed me this almost 6.5ft high beast.

I always just assumed it was something else lol.

Certainly looks like asparagus to me. However, it's not edible at that stage - you harvest the spears before they grow into what you see in your picture.

Apparently they are hidden under a large Peony and sweet peas before they rocket up.

I agree with RL - they probably wouldn't have noticed the spears hidden under all that Peony foliage.

Ah, you beat me to it! Hopefully there's more than just those two - you won't get a huge harvest!

They must of been there since I was a kid as my folks never planted them apparently so a good 35 years. Maybe I could split the crown to try and rejuvenate them?

I have never heard of splitting crowns Jamesy - and they don't like competition so this one will struggle with having a peony crowding it out. Better to start with a new crown or two in a specially prepared spot.
