  • Too Many Courgettes?

    Hey all, this is my first year with a proper greenhouse in place so im still picking things up and getting a routine together.

    I planted 10 courgette seeds all 10 have germinated then i read elsewhere that 2 plants should Adequately supply an average family, is this the case?

    Depends on, how much you all like 'em, how many in family, how good the growing season was, etc etc

        You will be tired of them by the end of the year ! ! ! They are always good to give to less green fingered friends. Try growing them up a trypod of canes, keeps 'em clean and they are easier to spot. Cheers, Tony

          I am no expert, but I've had gluts and I've had shortages, and this year new country new conditions was deffo a shortage


          But given there's only 2 of you and if they produce well, you'd best start using the search function on here and also start googling courgettes recipes

            I'm growing 6 courgettes this year for the 3 of us. 2 green 2 yellow and 2 black beauty's. 10 sound a lot but it better to grow too many than not enough imho if you have the space.

                I find the skin on the yeller 'uns is a lot tougher than the green 'uns, but they are a lot easier to see. Cheers, Tony

                      ive got 2 in a grow back around 80 cms apart, and trying 2 in a buckets may offer the other plants to locals so if anyones in Liverpool let me know!

                        I read someone on here grates the excess and freezes them to add to sauces throughout the winter. No one ever wants our excess, so I pickle some, make some into chutneys and there's a few not bad chocolate cakes/brownie recipes out there.

                          I never have enough courgettes - especially last year when they were hopeless.
                          When I have lots I slice them lengthwise, and dry them out in a slow oven until they're a bit leathery. Then pack them into jars with herbs and cover with olive oil. Great for adding to pizzas or sandwiches.

                            I never have enough either. I polished off my first batch of pickled courgettes [i made alot of jars that year!] from summer 2010 - and started on 2011 just last night. That includes eating a large jar of 2011 pickled gherkins made the same way. It's a most excellent recipe and if I get enough this year, all the rellies will get a jar for the festive season 2012.

                            I also love the yellow ones, and especially love the creamy white ones, my white serpent squash is already getting quite big in the kitchen, and I've taken a couple of flowers off...can't wait to let this one off at the plot and get it growing up my wall of squash.

                            2 plants would never be enough for us - as for the first month I take them when they are 'diddy' so I need about 10 to make regular meals with them.

                              I like that idea. How long do they keep like that?
