Rusty Garlic

Hi All, Hope you all havent eaten too many easter eggs this year!

Just spent a lovely day on the lottie, while I was there I notice some of my galic have a little bit of rust - not much. Is there anything I can do to stop it.

Hi Loz,

I spotted rust on my garlic twodays ago. I spyed using Diathane 945. It worked last year. At the same time I sprayed ALL my onions, leeks and shallots - just to be on the safe side 'cos prevention is better than cure.

I can't remember ever having grown garlic or leeks that didn't get a bit of rust but never had it on the onions yet. I can't really see the problem. if its really bad- cut and burn the worst leaves.

I am not sure as I fancy breathing/eating anything with just a number -but then again i am too mean to buy the chemicals anyway.

My guinea pig eats rusty leeks and rusty beet!!!

There were other threads about this problem before. It was thought the rust came from coach grass. It was also thought that garlic with rust on does'nt grow as big as it would do otherwise.

Yes, i have seen it on couch b4 but it doesn't seem to stop that much!!!! i think it is probably true about garlic too- but hey i grow so much of it. I just looked and it hardly has any this year.

Dithane 945 contains Mancozeb - this is the active ingredient, the 945 bit is just the trade name! you can get it from garden centres. Its a protective fungicide so won't cure the rust, but will certainly prevent it getting worse.

My garlic suffered with quite a bit of rust last year, i didn't spray them and the yield was quite poor. I also think they suffered with a bit of fusarium basal rot (which i mistook for white rot originally thank god it wasn't!) which won't have helped.

Bizzare as it might seem you could try spraying with a garlic spray (New Horizon is a brand i've seen in garden centres), as allicin (in garlic) has fungicidal properties and is 'natural'.

Thank you Protea. Interesting points, i'm also a bit worried about white rot as a few leaves are looking a bit yellow. I had an attack of shanking at home last year, so if the lottie is stuffed as well!!!...but if all is ok i'll do a trial with mancozeb and garlic spray when there is rust prob. Ill let you know results..

No wories - you won't see white rot at this time of year - it attacks in very hot dry weather (like last summer). The leaves of my garlic and overwintered shallots are also looking a little yellow - i sprayed them with seaweed over Easter which i hope will perk them up and also gave a top dressing of organic onion fertiliser.

Try a pick me up before assuming the worst

Also gave mine a dose of maxicrop last week. I don't have sp onion mix but threw som bld/fis/bn around.

Sorry to get pessimistic but I was pretty dissapointed about jap onion crop last year. Will remain positive...mantra... "worry is interest paid on events yet to happen."

I checked my garlic and found some rust - swear it wasn't there yesterday!

I removed the affected leaves and hope that'll be enough. The leeks seem fine.
