  • Pumpkin and squash identification.

I have about a dozen various pumpkin/squash dotted about the allotment. These consist of three varieties, butternut Avalon, a green speckled squash and a yellow halloween pumpkin.

The only ones I can find at present are green pumpkins, some of which are the size of a small football. Do the yellow punpkins start off green or are these the geeen speckled squash which gain the speckles later?
How do I know when any are ready to eat as I imagine taking them off will help others to form?

Aha, a downside to random pocket planting !

It's getting a bit late in the year for others to form, imo. I'm now nipping the growing points off my pumpkin plants so they concentrate on trying to ripen in this dark cold gloomy August weather

The pumpkins may well start off green, mine have. Some varieties start off a very pale yellow/beige colour and ripen to orange, other start looking a bit like an immature marrow in colour and ripen to orange

I wish I could use the weather as an excuse Snadge, but I can't...it's been lovely and sunny for most of the time, cool on a night but never the less nice.

I think I'll be buying the Halloween lanterns this year I've got Atlantic Giant, Howden, Blue Moon and an SMT giant. Out of 8 plants I've got one decent pumpkin growing!
