Help! my Hazelnuts Fell Off

I have two Hazelnut trees which I planted in the early spring this year. They seem to be doing well; they have grown taller, filled out and have [had now] four friut clusters each. Yesterday afternoon I came home to find on both of the trees three of the four clusters of fruit[nuts] were on the floor. I had a closer look and it seems that the 'stalk' which attaches them to the tree had miniscule nibble marks just about visible to the naked eye.
Any ideas what has happened; my OH is gutted as he doesn't eat fruits and this is the only thing he was looking forward to trying

Aawww came back this afternoon from work and the rest of the clusters of nuts from both trees were on the floor.

does anyone have any ideas what or why this has happened.

I found Hazels on the ground yesterday morning, whilst walking the Pup. No nuts inside, and teeth marks around the outside. I'd say Tree Rats, too.
