  • brown spots of strawberries

    Hiya,

I have brown spots developing on the fruits of a couple of my strawb plants. I can take a pic. Any ideas as to why this is happening and why? also if the fruit is edible?

I can't really help but I have noticed this on a few of mine also this year, they dont seem rotten or soft just discoloured so they should still be edible, I had just put it down to the weather change after a long hot dry period but hopefully some one will be able to shed some light on it?

This website has pictures of the various leaf spot causes. I'm afraid there's not much that can be done apart from growing different varieties that are less prone to them. The fruit will still be ok to eat though

The spots are on the actual fruits though the rest of the plant seems healthy, but I did just look at that site I didn't realise so much could go wrong I always thought that strawbs were pretty indestructable plants

Hi, can you take a pic?
I sometimes get brown spots on the fruit when I've accidentally splashed the fruit with plant food - they tend to be just a brown discolouration that's just on the surface - I'd just cut that bit off with mine to be safe.
Either that or water/rain sat on the surface when it's in bright sunlight.
Rots and fungal diseases normally spread on the fruit quite quickly and are obviously deeper, normally making the whole fruit rotten (and are normally seen on the leaves too).

I think strawberries are normally ok if bought new, it's when they're grown in large quantities in the same place for years at a time like on farms you start getting a lot of problems.
