  • When does garlic form cloves?

The garlic cloves that I planted last October look rather like young leeks (very slight bulbing at the base with just concentric rings down to the bottom) at the moment, with no sign of having divided into cloves. Does anyone know when this normally happens and whether there is any chance it will happen yet?

I would have thought it had already happened but you might not be able to see till the bulbs swell more - on the basis they need a period of cold to form cloves

Yes, as we have had hardly any rain for the past 3 months, maybe I am looking at the central stem of the garlic and the cloves should be swelling around that but haven't due to lack of water.

They just need more time to fatten up.
