  • onions and garlic - when to harvest?

Hi, I have grown autumn onions and garlic for the first time - planted last oct/nov but am totally unsure as to when I should be harvesting them?! The onions look fab with good bulb growth, the garlic smells wonderful but I cannot see signs of bulb growth at the surface. Should I be harvesting now or should I be doing something else?

    thanks

With the garlic wait until more than half the foliage has gone Yellow and they should be some where ready then....jacob

Same applies to your onions - wait til the foliage starts to turn yellow and die back, then lift them on a warm day and dry them in the sun - though if your onions are the Japanese overwintering type, they don't store terribly well (at least so I'm told, I haven't grown them myself)

make sure you lay your onions/garlic out to dry before storing..on a rack in the sun..
