Garlic and onions

We are very new to this , we have never had a garden bu have just moved house and have a lovley garden with room for a veg plot at the end.
There are 4 flower beds that each had about 6-8 roses in them so we have removed them and in one of the beds we have planted some garlic, broad beans and red onion bulbs.

Our question is how long does it take them before we start to see them pop out of the soil?
and
should we put any bfb on them?

I put some garlic in about a week (maybe two) ago and there's some shoots appearing now. Broadies prob about the same. Me mum put some in a couple of weeks ago and they're showing already. It's been quite mild here though - in the day at least.
