Broad Beans and Onions

I'm going to over-winter broad beans again this year and wondered if I could plant my autumn onion sets in between. I'm not sure if they like the same type of soil and watering. Can anyone advise ?

I sow mine close enough so that they haven't any space inbetween; but last year the onions and broadies were grown in the same bed - the onions widely spaced and the broadies on the north side of the bed with canes at either end and string strung across for them to lean against.

Now I could well be completely wrong.....but....I've got it into my mind that you shouldn't grow Onions and Beans together, something to do with something released from the Onion which causes the Beans to produce stunted growth...might have read it in something about companion planting and uncompatible plants.

Not sure that's any help at all!!!
