  • storing apples

    hi all,
have just picked an enormous amount of apples many of which are in fantastic condition so ripe for storing. I remeber my mum wrapping apples in newspaper and packing them in cardboard boxes, my question is would you recomend this or are there any better alternatives?

    thanks

I'd have to say that this is still 'Early Season' for English apples, and if these are ripe now they probably won't keep for too long even if wrapped and stored in ideal conditions. Are they soft or hard fleshed Mrs Wadders? Most early apples are soft fleshed, and best eaten within a few weeks of harvest.

You'll notice that apples such as Discovery and Worcester's are only available in shops for a short period. Even with the big fruit growers temperature/gas controlled storage facilities cannot prolong the life of these early apples significantly before they go too soft and eventually rot.

By all means wrap and store some of these apples, but check every few days for signs they may be getting past it. Chutney, peel-slice and freeze, or juice and freeze may be better options.

      Cheers, Mark

Is it best to wait for apples to be really ripe before you store them or can you pick them a little early then store?

(sorry to hijack your thread but thought it an appropriate place to ask the question)
