When do gooseberries ripen and how do I know when to pick them please.

I don't use mine for cooking so I wait until they're a soft translutent yellow (or purple). I eat them straight from the plant, beautiful flavour, lovely and sweet, reminds me of when I was a kid.

If you want cookers pick them when they're still hard. You can freeze them too. Even the cooking varieties can be left right till then end when they're soft and sweet.
