  • Is it ok to put onions in raised beds outside now?

Actually I have some troughs that are good to grow my onions sets in and I was wondering if it's ok to sow them now as room in the house is limited at the moment due to building work, I thought I could maybe cover the tops of the troughs with a fleece?

Maincrop onion seed and sets should be sown outside in March.
If they are sown under cloches (or on a windowsill), they can be sown four weeks earlier.

I have a raised bed that has been under fleece for 3 weeks and plan to put in my onion sets later this week if it doesn't rain too much. As long as the soil is not wet & cold I think they will be O.K.

Thats good cheers, I will also put a fleece over it though I might put some polythene sheeting over it.

I put 170 odd into raised beds today [I really needed an hour at the lottie] and then put bubble wrap which I just happened to have in the car over the top. The soil was alot warmer than expected so I though - why not???
