  • squash/ pumpkin when ready?

    Hi all,

I am growing some 'crown prince' squash/pumpkins. I have one growing one one plant which has got quite large and a few small ones on another plant. But, how do I know when they are ready to pick?

    Thanks

Hi Blossom, according to Monty Don, squashes & pumpkins are ready to pick when the rind is no longer shiny but is dull, deep coloured & hard & the fruit feels heavy for it's size. They are usually ready to harvest around September or October but should be picked before it gets too cold or wet in the autumn. Hope that helps, it's the first time I've tried to grow any this year so I'm no expert & I don't think I'm going to get any to pick as mine are all still tiny!
Into every life a little rain must fall.
