  • Flowering Shallots

I am a first time grower and I noticed this morning that my shallots are starting to flower - is this normal? should I let them flower or will the flowers detract from the bulbs?

Take the flowers off same as with any onions. I have pulled my shallots up as they went in last year, and I was having problems with my red onions which were next to my shallots.
    Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
    and ends with backache

My shallots are doing the same thing - first time I've ever had this with shallots, it's usually onions that bolt. Pick the flower bulbs off and leave the plants to mature. You just need to be aware that any that have produced flowering stems won't store well so need to be used fairly soon after harvesting.

I won't be giving my shallots time to go into flower, as I will be using them, as most people use Spring Onions, just go out and pick a couple of bulbs and straight on my salad - have done this 45 years. They never reach the point of flowering or being dried out!!
A bit like the Peas - they never see the saucepan in our house!!
