    WANTED: New gardener needs help with seeds

    Hello,

    I am a new gardener and am hoping to set up a vegetable and herb garden for this year. I have just finished constructing my raised vegetable patches and vertical herb garden, both are made out of free reclaimed wood.

    I am hoping to keep gardening costs down and as this is my first year of gardening I don't have many resources or collections of seeds to use.

    Any advice regarding when seeds should be planted and when they should be moved outside would also be very much appreciated. I have always been interested in gardening as a child and this is my first year of having my own garden. I am very excited to get started but feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the information and choices available.

    Hi Nicola....Lidls do a very economical range of seeds which are very good, Wilkinsons too...

      In particular
      "All members requesting seeds/plants (for swap or SAE) should :
      have been members of the Vine for at least a month AND posted more than 50 posts"

        As binley mentions, try Lidl or Aldi. Seeds are only about 29p - 39p a packet.

          I've also noticed that a lt of places are doing 4 packets for the price of 3, and Morrisons, have onions sets, fruit bushes etc at just £1.00, Wilknsons also ver good prices.

            Apologies for the rule breaking, at this time of the night I was very hasty when joining as I am currently planning my veg patch after a fun day in the garden making use of the only dry day we have had here for many weeks. I guess I was over excited in this instance. I look forward to reading the forums and will be sure to ask for any advice as continue my journey.

                  Thank you all for your advice. I have a lidl which isn't too far away and have seen some seeds in Wilkinson which I didn't pay much attention too. I will go back and see what they have. I am particularly interested in growing things that I cannot easily buy at the supermarket (so sticking away from carrots, iceberg lettuce etc). I have looked for 'interesting seeds' online and they seem to be more expensive than things like Carrots which I know I could find in Wilkinson.

                  I have a lot of reading to do to break into this new hobby!

                      I will check it out veggiechicken thanks. I think I have heard of purple basil too, these variations in colours add interest where they are not available to buy at the supermarkets, also yellow and orange tomatoes are on my radar.

                        Different plants require different methods/soil/position/timing. It'd be well worth you ordering this from your library service, if you don't want to buy it.

                          I'd recommend carrots - I can't bear the supermarket ones, but the ones I grow at home make me dribble they are so good. And all different colours too.

                            I got 2 for the price of 3 today: £2 for 900 pea seeds, bargain

                            You will pay more for "interesting" aka heirloom seeds, because there is a smaller market for them & they tend to have higher labour costs etc.
                            Start with a modest handful of the things you really eat, and if you avoid F1 seeds you can save your own seed for future years ... so the cost of gardening will come down for you
