Grow Your Own Magazine

This year i thought I'd have a go at growing aubergines from seed. I was a little gutted when they arrived and it stated that they would not germinate unless they had very high temps. I don't have a propagator so bunged a load of seed in and left them in the hope that something would germinate.

A week or so later the first had germinated and finally at the weekend I potted on 24 plants I'm really bad a pricking out and discarding seedlings, i feel bad that they have made the effort to grow......

Anyway I haven't got space for half of these and don't want them to go to waste so if anyone near Newbury would like some aubergine plants please let me know.

Ha. Same here Xspye! I last grew aubergines about 20 years ago and decided I didn't have the time to faff so I tried to get plants. Couldn't, so I bought seed. I sowed them last Thursday on the kitchen sill and because I thought they'd be iffy at germinating I sowed a dozen, 6 in each of 2 pots. I've got 8 up already! If it's a good summer I'll try them outdoors in pots and in any spaces in the veg plot but I really only wanted a couple of plants. It's a feast or a famine, this gardening lark!

Believe it or not, the packet said 'in normal growing conditions, enough for 150 plants' Who, except a market gardener, needs that many?

Presumeably the same chap buys a pack of sutton's celery seeds because he needs 1400 celery seedlings!!

Nice to actually see a decent number of seeds in a packet though, really annoys me these day when you fork out quite a lot and there's only 6 seeds in the packet - cucumbers seem particularly bad for this!!!!!!

hi my seedlings all died so if you still have 2 or 3 to spare could you send them to me and a'd re-embruse you

I've still got some spares but they are quite big now and i'm not sure how to package and send them without them being damaged. Any ideas?

How big is quite big? Will it fit inside a kitchen roll tube?
Other than that, I have no idea.
