  • Whoops mix up!

    Hi,

I have mixed up my peas and mange tout! Both of which have grown well and have peas in.............. Is it ok to eat the outer pod of a pea? Have picked and plan to steam what ever it is whole...

    Ta much , M x

The outer pod of an ordinary pea won't do you any harm Mandy, but may be very stringy.

You can usually tell because mange tout are more squeaky than peas.

The shape of the pod is usually different. Mangetout are broad and flat with a little row of pea bumps on one edge while peas have their pea bumps in the middle of the pod - its a narrower pod too.
If you leave a pod to develop on each plant, you'll soon tell which is which!

          Thanks everyone,

They just have grown so much over the last few days! Think they are mange tout as described but will eat anyway ;-)

I wouldn't eat a pea pod. I would have thought it would be nasty and hard!

They're crunchy when young - perfectly edible - especially if you remove the strings along the sides (like stringing beans) I eat them straight off the plant

These are from a packet (Aldi) marked as 'Pois Mangetout'. But left unattended while we were on holiday, have plumped up into nice looking peas.
