  • Mmmm battering things!

My mother in law made her way into our hearts though her cooking - she was great! So I tried one of her recipes and what a revelation! Battered fried courgette flowers YUM! I made a batter swirled them in it and fried them till crisp and golden delicious! Then of course I went off to see what else I could find which would be enhanced be being battered and fried! = Nasturtium flowers pumpkin flowers and some broccoli florets. What other flowers are edible? There'll be nothing left in the garden at this rate, the kitchen smells a bit oily too! Hey ho
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

I love the Greek way of cooking courgettes in batter - thinly sliced on the diagonal to make long thin slices, not rounds. Deep fry in batter and sprinkle with parmesan.
I've also tried "Garden Fish" - runner beans cooked in batter

Everything is enhanced by being battered and fried.

I'm looking forward to having enough spare veg to make tempura, one of my favourite things to eat and totally excusable as its vegetables innit?

        ancee- that sounds lovely!
What recipe do you use for the batter?
I've only tried it a couple of times but my batter was so 'heavy' that I couldn't taste the flowers!

I really fancy having a go at this again!

          That's it!

Going to have to commit and get a fryer!

OH and I have been putting it off as we're pretty sure it will, inevitably, lead to our doom (we don't have an ounce of self control between us... well, himself might have an ounce but he's got to share it with me! ) but this all sounds soooooo tasty!

          Mmmmm... tempura...

Gadget Confession time...........I have a deep fat fryer in the garage full of oil that has been in it for 8 years. I'm afraid to open it in case its all green and stinking.
I used to use it outdoors 'cos the fatty smell seemed to linger for so long indoors. Can't believe its so long since I had a deep fried anything...........

My confession is that our deep fat frier doesn't have oil in it- but something called Vegetaline.
When it's cold it looks like white lard, but is in fact coconut oil.
It seems to have the highest fat/calorific value of any other frying substance known to man!

              ( but yup- it's really , really yummy )

I don't weigh things for batter - an egg, a spoonful or two of flour, some milk. Whisk with a fork until you're bored.

I had shallow fried battered courgette flowers the other day. They were nice with a sweet chili dipping sauce.

^^^ That'[s pretty much the batter I used! If you like it runny use more water, or thicker use less! I did it both ways. You can taste the flowers through it though Nicos they are well worth it. I fry in a bit of oil in the frying pan Vikki. No deep fat frying for me. Give em a go guys (If you haven't already!) VC I'm going to try that as soon as mine get big enough to pick

I have a friend who lived in Greece for a while. She recommended this method of cooking courgettes, thinly sliced. We had a glut and tried it, a few years ago. Deeeeeeelish! Never tried the flowers though...

Interesting that they use soda water for a light batter
