  • Do you use the whole of the veg?

I was wondering as I know loads have had many years of success growing your own stuff and enjoy eating it but do you eat the whole of the plant? I mean like the stalk bit off sprouts or broccoli and stuff like that.

Ive been juicing for a little while now and I juice everything apart from skins of orange, lemon, kiwi and stuff like that anything else I just bang it in the juicer and the amount of juice that comes out is brilliant as most of it seems to be in the stalk bit.

I have a soup maker (basically a liquidiser with a heating element, and a "computer" that beeps a lot! as well as deciding how much heating, and how much liquidising, is required).

Water from steamed veg from evening meal goes into it, along with any offcuts of prepared veg ... and then for lunch I add some stock, yoke of an egg, and anything else I fancy and press the BEEPing button!

FWIW I do find it a very handy implement at the moment it is Asparagus for supper and Asparagus soup for lunch ... most days

My dogs get the cabbage and sprout stalks. They are very tough and clean their teeth for them. The dogs always lurk around when I'm picking veg, so yes, if it's edible it gets eaten by either us or them.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

I bung in all bits of left over veg into soup...including outer lettuce leaves.
Having said that, between us, the chooks and the bunnies there isn't a lot left from our kitchen to go into the compost heap anymore
We are now resorting to guests and friends to bring their veg peelings etc for the compost!( and some of those the chooks/ bunnies eat!)

We used to have bunnies, 28 at one point they were all rescue and they do go though everything!!!

I think its fab that people use everything of the veg they grow. Only a year or 2 ago I would of thought it was not edible at all. We don't have much for the compost neither its mostly mulch off the juicer, weeds potato peelings or cardboard.
