Default Wish me luck.....giving kids homemade soup for tea!

Inspired by the various leek containing recipes on here but not one to "follow" a recipe I made a soup to finish off the last of last years crop - our leeks!

I used;
5/6 spuds
10 leeks
5 sticks celery
salt & pepper to taste
dash sherry (most went in my mouth )
dash balsalmic vingegar - ask me about my obsession with this later!
tablespoon mustard
around 4 pints water
tub of elmlea cream - added at very end
two teaspoons of cornflour - cos I made it too watery!

About to serve it now - wish me luck!!! Will be back later to let you know how it went down!

Good luck, my boys love home made soup. I usually make a spicy veg or chicken and veg soup with noodles or rice in it to thicken.

Did you whizz it down, or was it chunky?

For my soups, I have a secret ingredient; so secret in fact I don't know the name.

*wanders to fridge and back again*

Knorr touch of taste vege edition. in a bottle so you only need a teaspoon or so.

i think the fact that kids don't like it means it was probably gorgeous. That's what usually happens in our house with my OH's 11 year old. All they want these days is processed gunk; no matter how much I try. At least she loves broccolli and rice; which gets cooked alot when she is here.

I wizzed it down - any hint of a vegetable shape and it puts Hannah off. She said she didnt like the smell of it as soon as I put it in front of her so I put a stop to that (in case it put Daniel off too) by serving with Doritos to sprinkle over like crutons. She ate just over 1/2 a bowl (ladle) full so I dont think I did too bad. Daniel didnt eat quite that.

They both adore Heinz tomato soup so I tried to make fresh homemade tomato soup last year which they both hated. Next time I suggested tomato soup for lunch, Hannah asked if it was the one that lived in a tin. One of those classic kiddie phrases that makes you smile everytime you hear it!

I will try again in a couple of weeks - any ideas or recipes would be appreciated.

When I first started cooking for my step children, they asked if I was making "real" mash or the stuff you make by mashing potatoes - they soon learned which was real mash

I know that one; I make tomato soup with onion, apple, secret ingredient and a tin of toms and whizz it down. Add a bit of milk or creme fraiche and it's lovely. I'd never get that past May's junk food radar though...even though she eats heinz tom soup by the gallon.

I nearly fell over the other day though - I made pancakes fresh, and she said 'is it packet or real 'cos the packet stuff is too sweet'!!! So there is hope.

I've given up on trying stuff that is too different or spicy - she loves really bland stuff - even though ketchup and HP sauce are based on spicy recipes there's no budging her on trying anything slightly spicy! She has only just started eating cheese; and if it's not red leicester at a particular temperature, no chance.

At least she's only with us every other weekend. I'm dying to see her face when she realises how much time she will have to spend up the lottie over the summer!!! She's not going to like it!

i make a really nice butternut squash soup which we all love, cut a squash in half take out seeds, drizzle with garlic olive oil salt and pepper (fresh ground) and cumin seeds (sprinkle over) wrap loosely in foil and bake in oven until soft cool slightly and scoop out all the flesh, cut onion into small pieces and fry until soft but not brown in a little veg or olive oil, add squash and stir, add chicken stock (about a pint) then some milk or cream and warm through,, season to taste,, whizz until well blended and serve with crusty bread. yum enjoy!!

must admit ive been very lucky with my boy and food he will try anything once i tell him to chew and swallow it if he doesnt like it them at least he tried, but then i was very strict with dinner rules he was never allowed to leave the table till he had eaten all his food i think 5 hours was a record now he just eats the stuff hes not to keen on first and saves the best till last, luckily hes not a fan of processed food and he can make chicken kievs from scratch all on his own (bar the sliceing the breast in half) he gets his 3 plates out, 1 for freshly grated bread crumbs, one for the egg and one for the flour slaps a load of butter in a bowl crushes the garlic adds a few witches herbs as he calls em, (parsley in other words) butter in middle of breast roll in flour egg then bread crumbs, bungs em in the over for around 20 mins pending on size, not bad for a nine year old *just gotta work on the tidying room bit *

Like a pirate or some of the lottie???

Tried that last year; wouldn't eat the stuff she grew [groan] - wouldn't touch purple carrots [groan] gets bored after approx 3 1/2 minutes. At least she is a good reader and can have a little area for settling down in.

We eat lots of homemade soup in our house,(spicy parsnip last night, yummmy) but OH two teens arent at all keen - on soup generally, even the stuff in tins! Finedon - do you think it was the celery that put your two off? I've not yet met a child who liked celery (tho watch the posts pour in now to prove me wrong )

I made soup for my boys, all green veg!, chicken stock and cream.
Blended it down and gave it a kid suitable name - Snot Broth.
They loved it, so did the grown ups.
