  • Welsummer mommy!

My Welsummer has been sitting for 21 days and an hour ago I checked for any signs of broken bits of egg (first clues of hatching?) and to my surprise, there was a fluffy little yellow chick sat next to her!! Yaaay! Well after I had finished somersaulting, flip-flopping and running around the garden, I calmed down and I swear it felt like my own daughter had given birth. LOL. Anyways she has got 8 eggs - 6 warren/blackrocks off a friend and 2 of her own which will probably have Brahma daddy in them. I already have 2 of hers running around the garden at present (2 weeks on Weds) that I hatched in the inci and they have got the Brahma x. You see I also have a Welcock bantam that tries his luck with all the girls, so I am not sure who 'daddy' could be but with the 2 I have already the feathering on the legs and feet sort of give it away

That's really wonderful news I'd read somewhere that Welsummers don't make good broodies so you've just proved them wrong Mine are only 12-13 weeks old so there's a long way to go before they even think about egg laying let alone being broody!

By the way, we do need a pic, it's compulsory you know

Well so far I have seen 3 babies, there could be more. When I have looked in most of the time they are all tucked safely under mum. 2 are warrens and 1 welsummer x. Yes, I was very surprised that Mrs Welsummer sat through. She didn't even give any warning of broodiness, just refused to get off the nest one day and that was it. She would have been the last one of my flock I would have said would produce a hatch, but there you go chickens are amazing creatures - every single one of them! I will try to get piccies when possible.

Congratulations! It is indeed unusual for a Welsummer to go broody - and certainly none of mine ever have. Look forward to the pics.

UPDATE - 6 babies altogether. Mommy Welsummer is great. She has tried to get them to come outside the nestbox today but they are still a bit shy! She looks absolutely adorable sat like a big, fat, tea cosy keeping her little babies safe. Pics as soon as everyone is relaxed enough to allow me near with a camera.

Congratulations!!!It's great isn't it!!!The first we knew that ours had hatched was at about 10pm,having had a few beers & barbie with our lottie neighbours,we went in with the intention of candling the eggs(they were almost 3 days overdue & we'd almost given up hope),but instead heard little cheeping sounds from under mummy!Still don't know how I managed to sleep that night!

Aaaw!I just thought...if Daddy's a Brahma, will the little babies have fluffy feet?...bet they are gorgeous & like others can't wait for piccies!
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Here are the first piccies. I need to get the shutter speed better as they all move so fast all the time There are 4 Light Sussex, 1 warren and 1 Welsumer x Brahma (chipmunk!). Yes, the cross does have its daddys' hairy legs and feet and if the dark colouring is anything to go by it is a hen also. They spend most of the day outside with mom teaching them everything they need to know. She wil sit and warm them up from time to time. They get the occasional trampling from the bigger ones in the food scrummage but they are tough and apart from a little scream, just get on with it. Mum rambles all over the show with them, so my initial idea of containing them in a little area for safety wasn't needed.
