Strange object in nest box

I've yet to see an egg from mine, so can't help you. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the answer.

I thought I had a problem with an egg eater until I realised the remains of the egg I found was hard boiled!

Hmmmmmm says I "Hens don't lay hard boiled eggs, do they,scratching head"?

One of the guys from the allotments was taking the p*** by chucking a hard boiled egg into the run!

Did it look anything like this? Sorry it's covered in sawdust, but it sounds the same as one of mine passed in the summer. It looked and felt the same as cooked cod-roe, same sort of colour too

I found something exactly like this in the girls run today. I just picked it up and tossed it, thought nothing of it - they're always scratching up all sorts of lost goodies.

What is it?

So was changing nappies but you will still love them anyways :P

Yes Maureen it was the same colour but definitely egg shaped. It was in one of the nest boxes. It feels like very solid rubber. I'm glad mine aren't the only ones doing this!!! When we've had the smaller versions they've tried to eat it so am guessing it's egg related not poo related (Sorry Lynda66!) They've usually been dropped overnight from the perches.

As far as I can find out, I think it's called a "lash". Part of the reproductive tract gets a sort of cyst or polyp and it's shed in a similar way to human periods. Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but I've spent ages trying to find out myself, and apart from sending it away for histology (very expensive I think) nobody can tell me for definite

Thanks for that. Like you I haven't read about it anywhere and as they are laying well despite the short days, I wasn't specially concerned. In fact 2 who were a bit droopy have perked up with the arrival of some new feathers!
