  • Sneaky cockerel!

Some of my chooks running with cockerels are laying and some aren't. I always thought the cockerel had an inate sense of which ones were laying and only wasted energy on these birds, in his mind to perpetuate the species.

    How wrong can you be!

What I've noticed is he waits until one goes into the nestbox to lay an egg, gives her time to do so and tell the world she's done it, then there's such a racket in the coop as he has his way with her.

    Sneaky cockerel!

I'm glad I don't have a cockerel. At least my Laydees can lay and eat in peace! Men eh?

Must admit, I can't see the Laydees getting much from it and it is a bit rough and tumble!

My two wait at the bottom of the ramp from the hen-hut and just jump on the girls as they come down in a morning....

The Welsummers are smarter than the brown-hens though, as they fly/flutter off the top of the ramp to avoid unwanted attentions!
