  • RIP Ginger

The last of my January 2008 ex-batts died tonight. When I went to put them to bed she was lying on the step near the coop door and then went under the coop into the soft straw. After the others were in bed I looked under to see if she was ok and she had died. I think the heat over the last few days had finally done for her. She was beginning to swell up round her abdomen so I was expecting this. In fact had decided to take her to the vet tomorrow but she beat me to it!
RIP lovely girl. Corn on the cob and meal worms in chooky heaven!

So sorry to hear that. Both of you. We lost Hector today. He just fell asleep in his dust bath, only just a year old. My girls have been distraught, he was such a gent.

Thats really sad Shellintons. Any idea why? Such a shame when the bird is so young.

Poor chooks. I bet all of them lived in Heaven whilst they were on earth, so they'll be fine up in chook heaven.

No idea at all Sue, except he was an orpington and most breeders I have spoken to have said they have a tendency to 'fall off the perch' unexpectedly. He was such a lovely chap to have around.

Jules, thanks and I am sure they are all loving it up there. I know for a fact Hector had a great time, food, ladies, run of the garden. Life was good there. I wonder if he wore himself out? ;p

                  Hugs all round.
Had to have one of ours put to sleep yesterday.
Dont like seeing ony 2 of them out there now. Have to think on the bright side- she was ex batt and had 14 months extra and saw the "real world".

That's the downside of keeping any animal. But we wouldn't trade it for the time we have with them.
                      Hugs to you all.

Sorry to hear about Ginger, Sue. She did well to have another two and a half years with you after the horrors of the battery cage.

Sorry to hear about Hector, Shellingtons. Could he have had a heart attack?

Aww chins up peeps!! ((((HUGZZZZ)))) you know you all gave your chooks a good life, some comfort can come from that! I know loosing a much loved animal is hard to swallow! I feel for you all, thats just one of the reasons why I could not keep chooks myself, I would just get too attached! Its been bad enough over the years having to say bye bye to some of the cats Ive had around me. From since I was a small girl, I have always had pets of one kind or another, its soo hard to say bye bye to them when the time comes! All the best to all of you! xx

Sorry to hear about yesterday's losses. Part of chook keeping seems to be accepting that some of them won't be with us for a long time. 2 1/2 years out of prison is not bad for a batty though Sue.
