  • Prolapse

    Hi

When I was getting my hens up this morning I noticed that there was the inside of an egg on top of the shavings but no membrane. When our old hen Hetty came out of the coop the membrane was still stuck to her and she must have had a prolapse because her insides were sticking out of her vent. I instantly picked her up and got the membrane off and whatched to see if her insides returned (they did). She is quite quiet but OK. I am going to get some Preperation H cream and put that on tonight has anyone else had this proplem.

She is quite old approx 4-5years.

They do say (though I hasten to add that I've never tried) that you can put it back with a little vaseline on a (gloved!) finger. Sometimes you need to hold it in place for several minutes. I'm glad nature took its course - hope she continues well.

Yes, I had that with one of my ex-batts a while ago. I did put the prolapse back but it kept coming out again over about 3 days till it finally stayed in place. I didn't have any Preparation H, but I did have some ointment that I need to use myself for a skin condition (it contains a low dose steroid) and used that. She was absolutely fine afterwards though I don't think she ever laid any more eggs. She was happy though

If you take her off layers pellets it will stop her laying for a while and give the prolapse a chance to heal.
They do recur and folk will tell you the best thing is to cull. We had a discussion about this on the forum a few weeks ago.
My feeling is to give them a chance unless the hen is in distress.

There's a bit about this on Little hen Rescue website under 'fostering a hen'. I think any Haemorrhoid cream will do. Hope Hetty makes a full recovery.
