  • poorly chicken?

I have a chicken who looks poorly. She didn't lay yesterday but the one she laid this morning had a chalky texture but normal size etc. This afternoon she was under the coop when I let them out of the pen when I got home from work. This evening she has taken herself to the furthest end of the pen (I will literally have to crawl in mud to get to her) and she is just stood totally still.

She seems to have diarrhea and even when I threw corn in right next to her she has ignored it. She has also completely ignored the fresh pellets when I topped them up. Her comb is red and her eyes look ok and her breathing sounds/looks fine.

Should I give her till the morning and see how she is then?

Hi Likac. She certainly sounds off colour, poor thing. Can you separate her from the others for the night? Just in case it's something catching? Post an update tomorrow and hopefully a chicken expert will be around to help... Hope she's OK, it's worrying when they're not well isn't it?

I have just been back down to take her up into the coop. I didn't have to pick her up though - I stroked her a couple of times and then she turned round and walked up into the coop. I have shut them in tonight (I have been leaving the door open over the last few weeks).

I think I'll use Flubenvet and maybe get some antibiotics? Or I'll phone the vets for advice in the morning. I do feel a bit less worried now though that she took herself up into the coop with a little persuasion.

Yay! She has laid a soft egg and is much perkier this morning. Hopefully she is ok now.
