You're right, their feathers will start to grow back quite quickly and they'll look a lot less like a badly prepared oven-ready! (no offence intended to you, just the crappy battery farmers - or the people still demanding cheap eggs)

But how lovely for them that they have a happy new home and lots of TLC with you now.

OH said no to ex-batts as he didn't think we had enough experience to cope with them. And, sadly, our vet surgery has said they won't treat them - I think that's appalling and said so loudly.

Keep us updated with pics of their progress!

That's dreadful!!!!! Why should ex-batts be discriminated against through no fault of their own! Oooooooooooh I'm so angry about that!!!

I too think it's apalling that a vet practice won't treat ex-batts. Maybe you should tell them that you've told a forum of 18,000 readers how un-ethical they are!

When I went into the surgery to ask about avian training, it was quite full. About thirty people heard me express my disgust. The girl at the desk (who's lovely btw) said it was because they'd had bad experiences with ex-batts in the past. They have passed away from shock during treatment and the owners have blamed the vets. I can see that argument from both sides, but I don't think they should give up. Perhaps ex-batt owners should be made well aware of the stress caused by treatments, so that they can make a well-informed decision about having treatment in the first place?

We are contemplating using the avian-trained (and very experienced) vet who treats the birds of prey at DD's falconry. We would only be able to have his care for the chooks though, as he doesn't do much in the way of pets.

. I'd have more if I had the room (although I do think 20 is enough!)

Shame about your lousy vet, Julesapple. I took four of mine to the Vet a couple of months ago, and they were model patients, despite me having stand in the same room as a very badly behaved dog which was making a real racket. I hope you find a more sympathetic Vet.

The girls had their first cabbage today! It has been in the run for a couple of days but they have been avoiding it (I think they were very wary). Today I looked out of the window and they were having a really good go at it. I hope they don't get the runs now!

I haven't tried to pick any of them up yet although I am dying to give them a cuddle! I think they probably have enough to cope with at the moment without dealilng with an overenthusiastic chicken mummy .....

I have a proper hen house arriving on Friday and I'm so excited - I will post pics of that when it's up. I am going to build a hen gym too.

Jules I am really surprised about your vet. I haven't asked mine yet but I expect they will be OK because they are an exotic vet. Also they know me as I have been there 10 years with my dogs, rats and hamster (rats and hammy sadly demised now).

the thumbnail in the last post shows one of my dogs tessy at the window, wondering what I am doing outside with those funny looking creatures. She is desperate to have a close look at them but I'm not going to subject them to that yet!

lucky girls finding a home with you, my girls adopted me 4months ago and have got me properly trained

and have rewarded us every day with their antics and personalities and all but 2 have feathered up beautifully and you wouldnt know they ever looked like yours...and they rule the cats and dog so dont worry too much about introducing Tessy they'll soon let her know who's boss
