  • Need advice on some meat birds

We've got some Cobb Hubbard crosses to be fast growing (true) tasty (also true) birds.

8 of them were despatched a few weeks ago but for one reason or another, the others have been allowed to live.

This morning we found an egg and we know one (or more) of the boys is doing his job.

Is there any reason we can start collecting eggs to raise a clutch or, because of the fast growing and type of birds they are, will the eggs be non-fertile?

I'm not really sure. I have traditional Sussex as a dual type bird, usually keep the girls and eat the boys. That said I looked into the meat type of breeds a long time ago and thought that as a rule due to their size they weren't that good at "treading".

Are you keeping the boys and girls together? it's usual to keep them apart, the boys put on less weight if they are running with girls. As they start to do their job the fighting starts too.

They are still together because there weren't supposed to still be with us. I think their time is very limited if they can't produce offspring.

That was the reason I started with dual purpose birds although you could always put some in an incubator for a few days to see if any are fertile?
