  • My Girls are Here!

We had a lovely time at the breeders. Every hen we saw was lovely. Six or seven huge pens of them, all free ranging and bokking happily. And the most beautiful cockerels....what fab feathers they have.

OH finally settled on a Partridge Wyandotte (Shirley, after the mom in The Partridge Family) a Buff Sussex (Buffy) a Cream Legbar (Hattie, because she's wearing a hat) and a Wheaten Maran who doesn't have a name yet but I'm thinking about Gladys (my Nan was Gladys Wheatley)
They were fine on our long journey home, although Shirley sat on DD's lap all the way and watched out of the window as she wasn't happy in her carrier. I popped them into the hen house and left them to settle. Despite waking several times in the night I managed to restrain myself from going out into the garden and shining a torch through the henhouse windows every 5 minutes!

Hattie is the bravest one so far. She managed to get the lion's share of the corn I sprinkled everywhere to entice them out this morning, whilst Buffy dithered in the pophole holding up the other two. They are all out now and my cats are fascinated and horrified in turn. Desmond snuck right up to the mesh and got a severe clucking which made him turn tail very quickly. I think it will be cat treats all round for the next few days - poor mogs don't know what's hit them!

There's clucking going on it fits and starts. Not sure if it's mogs getting too close or the pecking order being established, but I'm jumping up everytime it starts and rushing to the french windows to investigate - it could become a new exercise workout!

Hopefully I'll get the camera out later.

Aaaaahhhhh, no housework going to be done this week then. My mum's called Gladys and she hates it. Don't think chooks mind what you call them though.

Mum! Frias is talking rude again!

When we went to get ours the breeder had lots of different ones and I wanted them ALL! Settled for 4 the same in the end - the friendliest type according to him and I can't fault him on that! The cat will soon realise that he's only just above you in the pecking order and WELL below the chickens!

        You'll never look back now!

Great to hear you've got your lovely chooks. Can't wait to see the pics. My cats have to take second place too but they've learnt to live with it.

I'm hopefully off to pick up some Cream Legbar hatching eggs this week, and will definitely have to steel myself to not come back with anything else ...... :-)

Hattie, my Cream Legbar (how proud I feel, saying that) is lovely. She's a bit smaller than the other girls, but is much the bravest. I've just been to pin washing out and she was right up to the mesh bok-boking at me. I guess she might have been seeing me off, but I like to think she was pleased to see me!

I love her plumage. Both Hattie and Shirley Partridge have the most detailed and clear feather markings. I'm going to collect a few feathers when they moult and make some scrapbook pages. Would be nice to make an album of my chooks.

Good luck at the breeders' in the week. I think you'll need a steely resolve!

And now the real fun begins Watching their characters develop, seeing them grow up and housework is definitely a dirty word (do it when there's visitors expected and only the bits that show!)

Dying to see some pictures of them
